International / Introduction
The University of North Texas has been highly concerned about developing programs that respond to the specific needs of International Students.
As part of this effort, the Student Health and Wellness Center, the Center for International Admissions and Academic Advising, and the Department of Kinesiology, Health Promotion and Recreation developed a program called "Welcoming Diversity in Health Care for International Students".
This program received funding for one year (Fall 1997 - May 1998) from the Charn Uswachoke Development Fund at the University of North Texas. Under this grant, two major products have been developed: 1) the design of a web page with relevant health education and disease prevention messages for international students, and 2) the development of a PowerPoint educational kit on cultural issues involved in gynecological care for international students. The target audience for the web page is international students, and the target audience for the PowerPoint educational kit is personnel at University Student Health Centers and offices who serve international students. This web site includes both products so they can be accessed by professionals and students all over the world.
The program started with discussions about health care in the United States and other countries. From these discussions we realized that there was a need to educate international students about health care in the U.S. and provide health care professionals with additional knowledge of medical practices in different cultures.
In order to identify specific health care concerns for international students, diverse focus groups were assembled to provide the necessary input to successfully examine the issues associated with this topic. Five groups were formed with international students, international advisors, and university health professionals. The focus groups were very insightful and provided the framework from which this web site and the educational kit were developed.
We invite you to fully explore the culmination of our project and ask for your comments or suggestions to assist us in improving it. We also have an interest in hearing about programs you have initiated in "Welcoming Diversity in Health Care" at your university health center. Our future efforts will include the translation of these materials into different languages once we are able to secure additional funding.
